Who would care to tell me how to wash/clean a Sparco 2 layer nomex suit ?? I asked the wife and she just looked at me like I was asking her to climb Mt. Everest. There is no staining - Just need to get some of the sweat out of it.

I was wondering what you were doing in the Ladies Group THE way to clean (and protect) your driving gear is: http://www.pegasusautorac...roup.asp?GroupID=MOLECULE . It does not leave any detergent residue to derate the protection. Use a pair of dryer balls instead of fabric softener. Get the entire system. Bob |

Wow, Bob, I thought I was taking an extreme risk here asking the ladies a question from the more domestic side of racing. Figured that they would know the
answer even tho they might think I was some sort of a sexist creep. Little did I know it you would be you who would ride to my rescue.
As to the Molecule, I had seen the product a bit back, but then as now it was out of the scope of the budget for this season. Guess I'll just have to smell a little rough thru PPIR and go to work on being genteel over the winter. Pete |

cleaning nomex suit | #3 | ||

The suit manufacturers usually recommend dry cleaning. I find the modern fireproof fabrics seem to get stinky fairly quickly. You can clean your suit in the
washing machine on the gentle cycle, cold water, with woolite. I usually wash my Sabelt three layer suit after every weekend. You can also spot treat for
oily/dirt spots. Sometimes it might take a couple of passes through the gentle cycle to get the funk out! Once clean hang dry out of the sun. The sun will fade
the fabric's colors. Hope that helps? Best, Andy Antipas

Cleaning a Race Suit, simplified | #4
|
This Andy wrote an article for Victory Lane after much research.
Andy A's advice is fine. It's simple, wash your race suit (and other washable gear) like you would a synthetic sweater. Don't use any treatments such as anti-static. Remember that most fire-resistant fabrics are synthetic. Treated cotton requires the same handling, and will retain its fire-resistance properties until it wears out -- with one exception. Check the care tag in the garment. Dry cleaning is fine, but expensive. Hang the suit to make sure residue solvent evaporates. Be Comfortable, Andy 912 Keller |

Thanks, Andy. I got essentially the same advice from an online Australian discussion board. I washed it right after the event at PPIR and now I am all sweet
and clean and ready for the driver's school at La Junta.
Speaking of La Junta, are you the event chair stuckee for 09 ?? Pete Living well in the land of naught

No wonder nobody wants to hang around with me during a race weekend. I only clean my suit once a season.

The June 2009 edition of "Open Wheel" magazine has a very good article on cleaning and maintaining a fire suit.

Driving Suit maintenance | #9
|
Please go back to my November 10 entry regarding cleaning a driving suit.
In brief, clean your driving suit like you would a synthetic sweater. Use no special treatments, and wash separate of linty garments. It's that simple. Does your suit need repairs? I have fire-resistant fabric pieces in many colors and can tell you where to find thread. You can do it by hand or on a sewing machine. I have a tip for machine sewing...
